Our History
A Legacy of Resilience
On this site stood the original Jacksonville Grade School, which served students from 1925 to 1930. In one wing, children in grades one through seven learned and grew; in another, students in grades eight through eleven prepared for the future. Though the building was lost to fire in 1930, its purpose and spirit endured.
In the early 1930s, a new two-story school rose from the ashes and reopened as Jacksonville Senior High School, continuing to serve grades one through eleven. When fire again damaged the building in 1940, the community rebuilt once more, preserving the exterior walls and reopening the school in 1941. Through hardship and renewal, this place remained a steadfast center of learning.
This site also stands within the broader story of public education in Jacksonville. Before the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision and before desegregation reached eastern North Carolina, Jacksonville Senior High School served white students, while Georgetown High School served Black students nearby. Both schools stood in the heart of downtown Jacksonville, near City Hall and the Onslow County Courthouse, reflecting both the realities of their time and the long journey toward equality in education.
In 1962, Jacksonville Senior High School moved to Henderson Drive, now the home of Jacksonville High School. The New Bridge Street building continued its service as Jacksonville Junior High School, later becoming Jacksonville Middle School in 1984. After closing for renovation in 1997, the building opened a new chapter in the fall of 1998 as New Bridge Middle School, the first magnet middle school in Onslow County.
For generations, this place has stood as more than a school building. It is a testament to perseverance, transformation, and the enduring belief that education can light the way forward
